International IDEA began working in Paraguay in 2016 to support national efforts to achieve more inclusive, transparent and sustainable electoral processes, by strengthening the institutional capacities of the Superior Electoral Tribunal and national stakeholders. We also work to promote the participation of under-represented groups in politics and elections, particularly women, youth, indigenous communities, and persons with disabilities.
International IDEA is currently implementing a large project funded by the European Union focused on the Promotion of Democracy through Capacity Development of the National Electoral Management Body, concentrating on gender equality and promotion of women’s and youth participation throughout the electoral cycle, as well as professionalization, transparency and improved technical quality of elections in Paraguay.
In recent years, International IDEA had partners with the United Nations Development Programme and the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives to implement different programs that foster electoral resources and gender equality in politics.
International IDEA is partnering with local organization Semillas para la Democracia to implement a new project co-funded by the European Union: Level-Up Political Finance with Integrity, aimed at improving the political finance regulatory frameworks. More recently, International IDEA partnered with Fundación Saraki to promote access of persons with disabilities to the 2018 General Elections, and will be partnering with UNDP and UN Women to implement the ATENEA project, a comprehensive monitoring system to keep track of progress in the design of parity policies in Latin America.
