The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and the government of the Republic of Sudan have signed a memorandum of understanding that establishes a framework for International IDEA to provide assistance to Sudan’s democratic transition.

Under a programme entitled ‘Supporting Sudan’s Democratic Transition’, the programme implements various projects across International IDEA’s thematic areas, all of which will contribute to the establishment of necessary mechanisms for democratic governance, credible elections and inclusive constitution building processes in the country.

The programme’s work is organized around 4 foci:

  1. Dialogue and Consensus Building on the Transitional Processes
  2. Constitution Building
  3. Electoral Legal Reform and Inclusive Electoral Processes
  4. Civic Education

Women’s Political Participation is a cross-cutting area of work for the programme.

The specific objectives of the programme are:

  • To enhance mechanisms for stakeholders’ dialogue and consensus building on the transition processes
  • To strengthen the capacity of constitution makers and implementers to negotiate, draft and implement new constitution
  • To enhance the capacities of electoral stakeholders to reform the electoral legal framework
  • To strengthen civil society knowledge and skills on the transitional arrangements and democratic governance
  • To enhance women’s political participation at all levels

The International IDEA Sudan Programme falls under the Africa and West Asia Programme, and is supported by grants from the European Union (EU) and the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida).

To facilitate the successful implementation of the programme, International IDEA has established an office in the capital of Sudan, Khartoum, to oversee the implementation of the programme activities. Key International IDEA implementation partners include The Regional Centre for the Development of Civil Society (RCDCS), Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO) and Al-Alag Media Centre.
