New technologies play an integral role in organizing elections

The introduction of information and communications technologies (ICTs) into the electoral process is generating both interest and concern among voters, as well as practitioners across the globe. A number of countries have turned to a variety of technological solutions in a bid to make elections more efficient, more cost-effective and to strengthen stakeholder trust at each stage of the electoral cycle.

Rapid changes in technology and in society are affecting and challenging our traditional assumptions about how democracies work. Developing and developed democracies alike are facing difficult choices in adopting and in regulating technology use for beneficial democratic outcomes. To navigate these choices, policymakers and practitioners need access to comparative knowledge, best practice examples, conversations with like-minded peers, as well as analysis and advice customized to local context.

With its Institution-wide initiative on ICT, Elections and Democracy, International IDEA engages in research and debate with election management bodies, political parties, civil society, academia, democracy practitioners as well as the private sector to facilitate knowledge sharing, discussions, and debate.

International IDEA is trusted source for unbiased knowledge and analysis, offers a balanced view of opportunities and challenges that technology at the global level and customized application of this knowledge in specific country contexts.  View the ICT, Elections and Democracy Concept Note.
