Present in Haiti since September 2011, International IDEA has been working to enhance democratic governability and political participation and representation.

The Haiti Office focuses on strengthening political parties, parliament, and electoral institutions. The Office supports the political participation of youth and women and foster democratic accountability at the local level. We organize workshops and training with political parties, facilitate inter-party dialogue and have launched two studies on the state of political parties in Haiti, and on the relationship between political parties and their elected representatives in Parliament.

Additionally, we work with parliament to foster effective legislative agenda setting and provide technical assistance to parliamentary commissions and individual legislators for increased legislative performance.

We build strategic partnerships with local women’s and youth associations to foster the political integration of women and youth, through sensitization campaigns and training sessions. We incorporate policy advice for the implementation of the constitutional gender quota of at least 30 percent women at all decision-making levels.

We also work to improve the integrity of electoral processes in Haiti, supporting the institutionalization of a permanent electoral management body as well as providing training for electoral personnel in the country.

Finally, our work focuses on the improvement of democratic accountability at local level, with awareness-raising campaigns, training for mayors and pilot projects to encourage increased civil society participation and local government accountability at the municipal level.
